Cadet Alex Marcel Thomas, Jr was honored this week during the Academy's parade by the Corps of Cadets and was awarded the special green-and-white cord to wear on his uniform, signifying his selection as the Greenbrier Cadet for 2017-2018. Cadet Thomas, a junior, is the son of Althea Glover of Birmingham, Alabama. He has attended Fork Union Military Academy since January 2014 when he enrolled as an eighth grader. This is the twenty-third year in which a Greenbrier Cadet has been designated to wear the special green-and-white cord to commemorate Greenbrier Military School and its alumni who continue to be proud of their alma mater and who keep their school spirit active by supporting today's Fork Union Military Academy Corps of Cadets. Greenbrier Military School was founded in 1875 and operated as a respected boys military boarding school for much of the 20th century. Greenbrier closed its doors in 1972, and in the years since, its alumni have forged a bond with Fork Union Military Academy in order to keep the memory of Greenbrier alive and doing good for the young men of today's generation. Fork Union Military Academy is a private, college-preparatory, Christian boarding school for boys located in Fluvanna County in Virginia. Founded in 1898 by Dr. William E. Hatcher, the Academy offers an extensive college preparatory program for boys in grades 7 through 12, as well as for recent high school graduates seeking a one-year postgraduate program to better prepare for the college of their choice. The Academy enrolls students from throughout the United States and from numerous countries beyond our nation’s borders. The school's goal is to see that 100% of its graduating seniors gain acceptance to the college or colleges of their choice, an expectation that is successfully achieved year in and year out. Fork Union Military Academy is fully accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is recognized as an accredited school through the Virginia Council for Private Education and the Virginia Department of Education. |
