Students Enrolled in Spanish Courses

While the Academy uses Schoology as its school-wide Learning Management System (LMS) to facilitate both in-person and distance education, it is important to note that those currently enrolled in Spanish courses will complete much of their virtual course work through Vista Higher Learning (VHL), an interactive, online Spanish textbook/workbook that the Academy adopted in 2019. While VHL is used in the in-person classroom, it has also served as the main distance education tool for our cadets enrolled in Spanish. Students currently enrolled in Spanish for Term 4 already have access to their accounts and should have a strong understanding of how the system works. Each day, Spanish students should check Schoology to access the daily check-in. Upon completing the check-in, they should access the relevant folders in Schoology and/or their email for further instruction on the assignments to be completed in VHL for that day.

Any questions regarding VHL should be directed to your son's respective Spanish teacher via email. If your cadet is currently enrolled in Spanish I, please direct your questions to Captain Boyd, who can be reached via email at BoydM@fuma.org. If your cadet is currently enrolled in Spanish II, please direct your questions to LTC Hooper, who can be reached via email at HooperM@fuma.org.

Modified Plan for 7th-Grade Cadets

As a former 7th-grade instructor at the Academy, I am acutely aware of the fact that, at times, communications regarding the Academy as a whole do not always squarely align with the 7th-grade program. Most of the time, this is due to the fact that, aside from one term each year, the 7th grade does not operate on the One Subject Plan. Such is the case during Term 4 this year, where 7th-grade cadets are currently enrolled in Humanities 7 and Science 7 simultaneously. For the remainder of today's brief, I will directly address 7th-grade families and cadets, briefing them on how their two weeks of distance learning will work following this week's Spring Break.

Seminar Courses:

As discussed yesterday, 7th-grade seminar courses (Sculpture, Film Study, and Woodworking) will not meet virtually. 7th-grade cadets will resume seminar instruction in-person on Monday, March 8th.

Week #1 (February 22-26):

During the first week of distance learning for Term 4, 7th-grade cadets will only be required to complete work for Science 7 with Captain Higginbotham. Please have students check their email and/or Schoology for assignment instructions and due dates/times. Please direct any questions regarding specifics for week #1 to Captain Higginbotham at HigginbothamC@fuma.org.

Week #2 (March 1-5):

During the second week of distance learning for Term 4, 7th-grade cadets will only be required to complete work for Humanities 7 (English 7 and U.S. History 7) with Major Mitchell. Please have students check their email and/or Schoology for assignment instructions and due dates/times. Please direct any questions regarding specifics for week #2 to Major Mitchell at MitchellD@fuma.org.

Daily Check-in & Devotional:

Like all Upper School cadets, 7th-grade cadets will be required to complete the daily check-in and devotional during both weeks (by 0830 in their respective time zones). During week #1, 7th-grade cadets will be required to complete the check-in for Science 7 with Captain Higginbotham. During week #2, they will be required to do the same with Major Mitchell. During their respective weeks, each teacher will post the check-in form in Schoology.

Our next update

In our next update this week, we will discuss who to contact with technology issues that may arise during the two-week distance learning period

Best regards,
