Chess Team Finishes Second at Maggie Walker Tournament

The chess team from Fork Union Military Academy was able to take second place in their division at the Maggie L. Walker Winter Scholastic Chess Tournament held this past weekend at the Governor's School in Richmond, Virginia, despite being short-handed.

The Fork Union team was disadvantaged by being one player short on the team when another cadet was unexpectedly absent. In the Virginia Scholastic Chess Association tournament, the top four players' points count toward the team total. Despite having only three players on the Fork Union team, the team earned enough total points to capture second place in their division, finishing behind the host team from the Governor's School, with five players, who secured first place. Going into the fourth round, the Fork Union team was facing a possible last place finish and needed wins from all three players, Cadets Alexander Birch, Luming Zhao, and Ikdoo Kim, to prevent that. All three players were victorious in their final games and the Fork Union team secured a hard-earned second place finish.

Chess team coach, COL Chris Nothnagle, said, "The Chess team has exceeded my expectations this weekend by ending up with a clean sweep of opponents during the last round at the Governors school in Richmond. I'm very proud of their efforts."

Academic Honors for Term 3

The following cadets have earned academic honors for their performance in class during Term 3.

Fork Union Military Academy is nationally-recognized for its unique One Subject Plan curriculum, followed at the school since 1950. Under the One Subject Plan, instead of students taking four to six classes every day, students take just one subject at a time. The year is divided into five grading periods of about seven weeks each. Each grading period, the student takes one class, such as English or Algebra or Biology. He is with that one teacher all day, every day, for those seven weeks. In a typical school system, a teacher may be responsible for teaching as many as 80 to 150 different students every day in several different classes. At Fork Union Military Academy, a teacher has only one classroom of about ten to seventeen students each day, every day, for seven weeks. Teachers get to know students as individuals, and students get to concentrate fully on each subject. This is believed to be one of the key factors in Fork Union Military Academy achieving a 100% college acceptance rate for seniors, and maintaining a sizable honor roll of students earning academic honors each grading period.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

As a boarding school, we do not have snow days, nor do we adhere to other local school bulletins regarding closures or delays in the event of inclement weather.  Day student cadets are expected to attend classes on inclement weather days, however, no one should be put at risk in order to make it to campus if conditions are unsafe.

Day Student cadets are welcome to stay in the barracks either prior to weather or after inclement weather has started.  The Academy will provide bed sheets, pillowcase, and any meals during the cadet's stay, at no additional cost.  If a cadet is staying in the barracks, he should bring a blanket, pillow, any necessary toiletries, a towel, and all uniform pieces needed during his stay (which include t-shirt, shorts and sweat suit).  Day students staying in the barracks are expected to follow the same rules and regulations as the boarding students.

Day Student cadets needing room accommodations are to see their TAC Officer for a room assignment.

ABSENT NOTICES POLICY

If your son is sick and cannot attend school, we ask that you send an email to absent@fuma.org as soon as possible in the morning.  All that need to know about his absence will be notified (Dean, Faculty, Infirmary, Commandant).

If he is out for more than 3 days, he will need to return with a doctor's excuse.

DOCTOR/DENTAL APPOINTMENTS POLICY

Medical, dental, and orthodontic appointments should be scheduled after class time.  Routine appointments should be scheduled on school days off (certain Mondays throughout year) or during major lealves.

Any medical leave must first be directed to the academy Head Nurse in the Infirmary (infirmary@fuma.org or 434-842-4314).  The request is then forwarded to the Deputy Commandant for approval.  Any missed class time must be approved by the Academic Dean.

Day student parents are responsible for transportation to any appointments.

DAY STUDENT DRIVERS

Day students that drive to campus, must park near the outdoor basketball courts.       Drivers ARE NOT allowed to move or park their vehicle in another location unless approved by Commandant's Department.  Day students are not allowed to park in front of or behind Estes Athletic Center at any time.  This can cause driving privileges to campus to be revoked by the Commandant's Department.

PARENTS DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP CADETS

Just as a reminder, the road around the Jacobson Hall building is now one way.  Please enter from the first corner of the building (at Charlie Company) and follow around to the end.  For the safety of ALL cadets, we ask that you form one line and DO NOT attempt to pass stopped vehicles to the left as cadets are bringing dropped off.  When picking up cadets, if you would like to park -- please pull off to the side of the road.

Online registration is now open for the 2017 Fork Union Basketball Camp to be held on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy from July 9–July 13, 2017 for boys and girls in grades 2 to 12. Registration is available online through Eventbrite at this link.

Fork Union Basketball School was established in 1985 under the direction of Coach Fletcher Arritt. Coach Arritt will again be present at this year’s basketball school, but the camp will continue to be under the guidance of Fork Union Postgraduate Basketball Coach Matt Donohue. Over the past four decades, more than 200 of FUMA’s players have gone on to play Division I basketball. Throughout Thomas Gymnasium, one can view an impressive display of college jerseys donated by former players. These athletes, along with other well-respected players, are the core of the teaching staff at Fork Union Basketball School.

Experience, success, love of the sport, and enthusiasm; all are reflective of the three-plus decades FUBS has continued to educate campers in the fundamentals of the game. Included with skill instruction is good sportsmanship, social skills and the importance of teamwork. Boarding on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy is available for boys from 2nd to 12th grade. Girls and boys may attend as day campers. We have a full schedule that allows for various ages and skill levels.

The camp is located on the 1,400+ acre campus of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. FUMA is on Route 15 approximately 18 miles south of Zion Crossroads, 35 miles from Charlottesville, 50 miles from Richmond, and 100 miles from Washington, DC. Campers are housed in the brand new Academy Jacobson Hall dorm staffed by camp counselors and instructors. Meals begin Sunday evening and end with breakfast on Thursday. Day campers may have lunch and dinner.

This past Friday, Amy Reese, the Academy's Activities Coordinator shared with the Cadet Corps a presentation about the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and our Penny War fundraiser, along with the results of the fundraising project. The lofty goal this year was to raise $3,000 for this cause, and our cadets blew that target out of the water. Mrs. Reese proudly reported that Fork Union Military Academy raised $4,654.07 for LLS this year!

Bravo Company won the Penny War by collecting $1,434.77. Charlie Company was a very close second place collecting $1,421.55 (just $13.22 separated 1st and 2nd place).

"A huge part of our success this year was due to our cadets' efforts and the online donations we received from cadet family members," said Mrs. Reese. "Our cadets and their families are truly amazing!"

They hope to open a similar type of school in Qatar, and are traveling to the top schools in the world to learn about best practices and to ask questions of school leaders as they begin to plan for the creation of their own school.

RADM J. Scott Burhoe hosted the delegation as they toured the campus and facilities of Fork Union Military Academy and spoke with members of the senior staff and faculty regarding the operations of the Academy.

Applied Christianity class takes service trip

The Applied Christianity class traveled to White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue on last Wednesday. The rescue, located about 20 minutes south of Farmville, is non-profit corporation dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused, neglected and at-risk Appaloosa and other horses, especially those in urgent need and in danger of slaughter. Eleven cadets traveled to the farm that day, and they spent several hours helping to clear out nine stables. The labor was hard, and it required some of the cadets to step outside their comfort zone and into an environment they had never experienced. But while the work was strenuous, it was rewarding as well. Senior Andrew Morris stated, “This service has reminded me that I am only part of the picture, as the whole class worked together to complete the work and our work helped others.”

This service trip opportunity is one of many that the Applied Christianity class will experience this term. The cadets will spend time in the classroom learning about life purpose in light of the Christian faith, and our call from Jesus to love our neighbors. This love is many times exhibited through service, and cadets will have the opportunity to serve various organizations as part of the class: Camp Crossroads and Conference Center, the Fluvanna SPCA, Central Elementary School, Eagle Eyrie Conference Center, and the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond.

For more photos from the class trip, view our online photo gallery.

Cadets create Pinwheel Garden for Child Abuse Prevention Month

Cadets in the Interact Club worked with faculty advisor CSM Catherine Garcia to place dozens and dozens of bright, shiny pinwheels alongside US Route 15 at the front of the campus to call attention to April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The pinwheel—that happy and whimsical symbol of childhood—has been adopted by Prevent Child Abuse America, Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, and other organizations as a national symbol in the effort to prevent child abuse. The colorful pinwheel gardens planted this month around the nation help call attention to the cause.

In recent years, our cadets have taken part in this effort by planting a large and attention-grabbing pinwheel garden along this area's busiest highway, US Route 15, where it passes in front of our campus. We hope drivers and pedestrians alike will enjoy the beautiful display and will have their attention directed to the important effort to aid children by the Prevent Child Abuse Virginia organization.

Learn more about pinwheel gardens at the Prevent Child Abuse Virginia website.

Fork Union Military Academy inducts over two dozen cadets into National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society

Fork Union Military Academy inducted twenty cadets (three seniors and seventeen juniors) into the National Honor Society in a ceremony in Wicker Chapel attended by the entire Corps of Cadets. In addition, five 8th graders and four freshmen were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 and is the nation's most prestigious organization honoring students in grades 10 to 12 for their outstanding academic performance, character, and conduct. The National Junior Honor Society likewise recognizes students in grades 6 to 9. This year, the Academy inducted three seniors and seventeen juniors into the National Honor Society. In addition, nine cadets were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.  To be eligible for membership, cadets must be in at least their second year of attendance at the Academy. Academic and conduct qualifications for membership in the Fork Union Military Academy chapter are even more stringent than the national guidelines and induction into the NHS or NJHS is one of the Academy's top academic honors.
